Trip to Sri Lanka - Mahiyanganaya

Sri Lanka is a tropical Island country located Indian ocean. It is full of breath taking scenery. As a result of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia. It was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road. Sri Lanka has also been a center of the Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times and is one of the few remaining abodes of Buddhism in South Asia along with Ladakh, Bhutan and the Chittagong hill tracts. The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population; Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the aboriginal Vedda people.

All above pictures are taken on 07 December 2010 trip to mahiyangana. And all locations are in between Kandy ( Hill capitol of the Sri Lanka) an Mahiyanganaya (Region where the Vaddhas lived). Vaddhas are small group of tribal people which lived follwing their traditional life styls. Mainly they make their living by farming and hunting. Nowadays any type of hunting is prohibitted in country. And Vaddhas are mixing with the other people in the country and following the stuff normal to everybody ells.

Mahiyanganaya - This is a region where most people make their living by farming.Vegetable and fruits are very fresh and cheap in this area. Most of them were transported to other areas of the country too.

This is the region of country's main source of sand (use for construction). This is the area where people can collect sand from main tiver of the country (Mahaweli River) without harming the environment. And it is a common site that large trucks caring sand traveling in all directions from Mahiyanganaya.

The road shown in the pictures are calld "Raja Mawatha" and was build 1986. And it is in very good condition. The current government of Sri Lanka is widening and rebuilding the old Kandy _ Mahiyangana road. Part of it is already completed and they have done a good job. In my next trip to Mahiyanganaya, i am planing to take the old road.
